Awwww, it’s our first single issue microparty.
Wikipedia informs me that the party was founded in 2016 and is basically unrelated to the previous party of the same name. This is their second WA state election.
The sole apparent policy of this party is that they want to either adopt daylight saving for WA via a private members bill or to force a fifth referendum in WA on the issue. They’re for it, partly to make business with the eastern seaboard easier during summer as the time difference is greater then.
Seems the sort of fun microparty that you just want to barrack on for being ridiculously obsessed right?
Well, unfortunately, it also looks like the Daylight Saving Party got frustrated after a classic Glenn Druery stitchup to try and get a microparty into parliament failed last WA election, and they’ve decided to take the situation into their own hands.
The party has applied to amend their party name to “Daylight Saving Party – The National Liberals”, with “National Liberals” as their ballot paper abbreviation.
Yes, seriously. National Liberals. Definitely just a random combination of words they picked out of a hat. Personally I think this is one of the most cynical responses I’ve ever seen to David Leyonhjelm winning a seat in NSW via the Liberal Democrats drawing Box A on the ballot, and there have certainly been some attempts since then (and another one coming up later in these reviews).
I am fairly hopeful that the WAEC, once they stop laughing and wipe the tears from their eyes, will deliver a resounding “No, as if we’ll let you do that” to this naked attempt to try and get into parliament by confusing voters into thinking that the party is actually the Liberal Party, but in the event that someone does let this slip through, it’s certainly going to make the election more entertaining.
I mean. Antony Green has ALREADY had words about how blatant an attempt to confuse voters this is. Do you really want Antony Green getting snarky about your party on national TV on election night? Do you?
Update: the WAEC refused to register the party name of "National Liberals".
Any Predictions?
No.
Is this party trying to kill me?
No.
Is this party trying to harm me?
Only if you consider the harm of excessive eye rolling. The Daylight Saving Party don’t have any harmful policies. That’s largely because they only have a single policy.
Conclusion:
Do not vote for this party. Just don’t. They have only one policy and they’re currently trying to manipulate the system blatantly.
Plus I think they’re idiots considering Mark McGowan is likely to romp straight back into government, but they are trying to pick up the Liberal vote, when we potentially will have FOUR SEPARATE PARTIES using the word “Liberal” in their name on the ballot.
Come off it.
I think you should probably still preference them ahead of any party that fails the “are you trying to kill/harm me” test, but don’t reward this bad behaviour.

Date: 2021-01-17 11:31 am (UTC)I'll update if/when we actually get some new policies out of them (I was working off the Wayback Machine and a few news articles from last go around) but the registration nonsense is clearly the highlight here.
