South Metropolitan has the most independents running of any of the regions, with 8 different tickets to investigate. There are very few details on any of these folk. This should be fun.

Graham West & Liam Strickland

Graham West is immediately difficult to track down as there is a former NSW Labor member for Campbelltown of the same name. He’s currently busy running the St Vincent De Paul Society in Australia and presumably not interested in running as an independent in WA. This is drowning out whatever the actual candidate is doing.

Liam Strickland won a prize in 2014 for a Year 12 art piece. Someone by his name is also a gang member in Christchurch that’s been implicated in a driving accident, which again is drowning the results.

Looking at the group voting ticket, they’ve preferenced the Lib Dems (the Druery pick of the region), all the other independents, WA Party, HAP, Liberals for Climate, Sustainable Australia, DSP… ok they’re another set of Druery-group affiliated fake independents to help confuse the vote. End of the ticket is Labor, AJP and then Socialist Alliance, so they really don’t like the socialists.

Looks like preference harvesters. Managed to pick names that are ungoogleable in terms of elections. Well done at confusing things.

Don’t vote for these folk.

Jourdan Kestel & Lee Herridge

Jourdan Kestel is an accountant and musician. He’s also a member of the Liberal Democrats – I’ve found him RSVPing to Lib Dem events during 2020.

Lee Herridge also lists his affiliation with the Liberal Democrats on Facebook. He used to run a libertarian podcast.

The group voting ticket here is Liberal Democrats, then WA Party, some independents, HAP, some more independents, Sustainable Australia, DSP, Liberals for Climate, and then the rest of the independents. Bottom of the ticket is Labor, Legalise Cannabis and AJP.

More preference harvesting fake independents. Ones who are bad at covering their tracks at not being Liberal Democrat members. Seriously. Stop it, Lib Dems.

Mark Rowley & Marlie Touchell
https://www.facebook.com/CandidateWA2021/posts
https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:uOicen59a5YJ:https://www.facebook.com/CandidateWA2021/posts+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au (cached version)

So! Mark Rowley has either deleted or made private his election candidacy page, which is a weird flex for right before an election, but the good old google cache is here to save the day.

Let me quote: “After pondering on, and turning down a kind offer from One Nation to run as a lower house candidate for next year’s Western Australian State Election, I have decided to run as an INDEPENDENT candidate for South Metro instead.
...
This way I can cast the net across a greater area of 15 electorates, and truly take the REAL concerns of the people to the legislative assembly (UPPER house) at the Western Australian State Election.”

I pledge to you that any votes for me will at the very least only go to support minor parties that have your personal freedom and sovereignty at heart.” - Bahahahahaha oh god my sides are splitting. “Personal freedom and sovereignty” are dogwhistling all sorts of sov-cit implications in my direction.

From what else is in the cached material, he is very disappointed in the major parties. He’s “Batting for the people and our country in the 2021 WA State Election. Campaigning on the issues we REALLY NEED to talk about. Question. Research. Think. Decide VOTE!

So basically, Mark Rowley is has One Nation views. And has definite crankish tendencies.

I can’t track down Marlie Touchell but she and Mark have both provided personal email addresses if you want to contact them and find out what on earth is going on with this election campaign of theirs.

Let’s look at the group voting ticket! Preferences flow to No Mandatory Vaccination, then One Nation, GAP, Australian Christians, Legalise Cannabis and Shooters. So yes, we are looking at some very right wing views here and anti-vax sentiments. End of the ticket is Labor, Socialist Alliance and the Greens.

Look, this is some weird One Nation candidate who decided to flake off from them (which is pretty standard honestly for One Nation candidates) and then after registering to run has started then hidden a facebook candidacy page.

Don’t vote for these right wing cranks who aren’t even confident enough to tell people during the actual election what they stand for.

Dave Glossop & Lewis Christian Butto
https://www.facebook.com/DaveGlossop4councillor/

Dave Glossop has run for the City of Swan Council in 2019. We luckily have a candidacy sheet here. He says he’s a small business tradie and cafe owner who thinks that ratepayers aren’t equally represented at local council level. The cafe is coeliac accredited and he posts Change the Date and anti-Margaret Court memes.

I’m confused if this is the Dave Glossop running in South Metro, as he seems to live in East Metro, but he’s certainly a politically engaged Dave Glossop and I cannot spot another.

Lewis Butto ran in the Agricultural Region as an Independent in 2017, where he garnered 2 personal votes and 58 votes total for the ticket he was on. He has an ABN as a sole trader that is also suggesting he lives in East Metro.

Their group voting ticket goes to the Lib Dems, then all the other independents, Sustainable Australia, Liberals for Climate, DSP, Health Australia, WA Party… This is another Druery group ticket. Bottom of ticket is Greens, Liberal, then Labor.

Dave Glossop looks like an interesting guy, but he’s clearly not running for himself here: this is yet another preference harvest “independent”.

Glen Michael Leslie & Stephen Yarwood

Glen Leslie has posted on official WA government facebook COVID advisory posts asking “Can WA Government tell me what the ages or age groups of those individuals that had died as a result of pneumonia from COVID-19 & if they had any underlying health issues?” and has links to Aaron Stonehouse (the current Lib Dem in the WA Parliament) livestreams on his personal facebook page.

Stephen Yarwood shares a name with the former Lord Mayor of Adelaide, so he’s pretty hard to track down, but he may run a small company that rents out twenty properties on Airbnb and has testified to a WA parliamentary committee about the benefits of short term rentals in 2019. I hate him already.

Clearly, we are dealing with another set of fake independents from the Liberal Democrats.

Their group voting tickets go to: The Liberal Democrats (Surprise!), some independents, DSP, more independents, WA Party, still more independents, Sustainable Australia, HAP, the rest of the independents and Liberals for Climate. End of the ticket is Liberals, Socialist Alliance and Labor.

Stop it, Lib Dems. STOP IT.

Stan Francis & Jeremy Lay

Stan Francis is the name of a WA cricketer of note from the 1930s: “Most wickets in innings: 10-32 by SG (Stan) Francis v West Perth, WACA, 1937-38”. As much as it would amuse us all, I do not think this is our candidate.

Jeremy Lay appears to run a restaurant in Northbridge. If he is this guy, he had some visa issues with his wife that resulted in their wedding having to take place in immigration detention.

I have not been able to find any political opinions from these two.

The group voting ticket suggests that they are anti-vax isolationists: Many independents, WA Party, more independents, No Mandatory Vax, WAxit, Legalise Cannabis. End of the ticket is Greens, Socialist Alliance and Labor.

These two don’t appear to be Liberal Democrat plants, but equally they seem pretty pointless as I can’t find an election platform at all.

Leon Hamilton

I can’t find this guy at all. There’s a cool BOM meterologist who has worked in Antartica at Mawson who’s called Leon Hamilton, but he’s from NSW. More likely, there’s someone who’s worked as a consultant for Rio Tinto with the name.

Leon Hamilton has not registered a group voting ticket.

Look. There’s an email address listed to his name, if you really want to find out about him and his views, but given he doesn’t appear to have let the internet know about his campaign, why bother?

Larry Foley

There is a Larry Foley who looks like he’s had a fascinating life around Freo, who was born in 1929. He worked in the wool industry for decades. There’s a Larry Foley who’s been an art dealer and donator to Art Gallery WA. There’s a Larry Foley who was a boxer in Sydney in the 1870s. I can’t imagine any of these men are the candidate running here (though Larry might be the son or grandson of the first Larry).

The group voting ticket equally doesn’t give us a lot to go on. It rotates preferences between the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and WA Party, (one of each until they run out of candidates) then adds Shooters to the round. The end of the ticket is GAP, AJP and One Nation.

Larry Foley is clearly someone of great personality. It’s a pity I can’t track down anything about what he stands for and why he’s running.
